Today's Tips Go Back
Motivated to Exercise

Tips to keep you motivated while exercising:

Itís easy to start a program. The hard part is sticking with it long enough to see and feel the positive results. If you truly want to be more active, follow these tips to keep you going each day:

∑ Be honest with yourself. Is exercising a chore to you, or something that you really want to do? Positive attitude is a key to success. If youíre ready to commit, keep readingÖ

∑ Set realistic goals. Know what you want out of the program before you start. Discuss these goals with your doctor to tailor a program that is right for you. Set three small goals, instead of one big one. This will inspire you to go further each time you reach a small goal.

∑ Choose activities that you like and that are convenient. Exercising should be fun! Many activities can qualify as exercise, even housework! Be creative; add music to your routine, or go outside to exercise. You can even practice particular movements while sitting in a chair!

∑ Make time for your exercising. Set aside a time, at least three times a week, and stick to that routine, as closely as possible. Consider it an investment.

∑ Always warm up before exercising to get your blood flowing and avoid unnecessary strain to your muscles.

∑ Donít overdo it. Begin slow and easy, increasing your routine gradually. This will allow you to avoid injury and help you to not burn out.

∑ Find a cheerleader. Spouses, friends, and family members can be a great source of motivation on the days you donít feel like exercising. Make sure they encourage you, and donít nag you. Better yet, find someone who will exercise with you! Support and a little friendly competition never hurt anyone.

∑ Vary your routine. Keep your activities new and exciting. This will give you a more well rounded routine, letting you pick and choose your workouts.

∑ When you drop out, just make it up at another time. Accept the fact that you may miss a workout from time to time. Tell yourself not to give up, and resume your commitment to better health.
